FAQs
Dosages.
There are no reliable standard dosages for most herbs for many reasons.
If you go to therapeuticresearch.com, one of the leading databases for information on herbs, the "Dosage" paragraph for most herbs says "The appropriate dose of [HERB] depends on several factors such as the user's age, health, and several other conditions. At this time there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for [HERB]. Keep in mind that natural products are not always necessarily safe and dosages can be important. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using."
Most herbs that are used for sleep are leaves, flowers or roots. Generally they have been measured by users, for many generations, a bit vaguely. A person uses a small amount (a teaspoon, a gram, whatever) and if it doesn't have an effect you use a little more. It would be nice if there were a set number of leaves (or grams of a leaf) that had the same effect on everyone but that's just not the way it is. Common sense is the first ingredient in any remedy.
The herbs in the Personal Sleep Kit are listed as having two days worth of each herb. What does that mean in practical terms? It's meant only as a general guideline. If you are a smaller person then it would be fine to spread one herb packet over four or five days. If you are a larger person you could try taking it as one dose (i.e., as a tea or as recommended for the specific herb).
The amounts included in each herb pack are amounts that are safe for almost anyone and which will also have the desired effect on most people who are sensitive to that specific herb.
Preparation.
Most of the herbs included in the Personal Sleep Kit are easily prepared as a cold tea. To prepare it, just put the herb in cold water for at least an hour, then pour the mix through a tea strainer and drink the liquid. One hour of soaking most leaves or flowers is an approximate minimum. A few hours is better, but not necessary. There's nothing wrong too with letting the herbs soak in water for a full day or longer.
Any herb that can be prepared as a cold tea can also be prepared as a hot tea. Boil some water and soak the herb in the hot water for at least a minute or so, then strain it. Heat generally does not have a good effect on most herbs, so cold (with a longer soak) is usually better but for most herbs there will be no noticeable difference between a hot tea made in a few minutes and a cold tea made in a few hours.
What does a person do after the Sleep Kit is finished?
Hopefully by the time a person has finished a sleep kit they have found several herbs that work well for them.Any of the herbs in the Sleep Kit can be bought online by the ounce or pound, or purchased locally in most areas, or even grown if you like. Most of the herbs used in the Sleep Kit come from Mountain Rose Herbs, one of the largest retailers / wholesalers of organic herbs in America.
Should a person take those herbs every night then? No. If you have long term insomnia or other sleep problems taking any remedy every night is a poor choice.
Insomnia is always caused by something and no herb or other substance will solve the problem unless the problem is a lack of that substance. If your insomnia is from, for example, a deficiency in some mineral then it is better to find that out and solve the problem effectively than to treat the symptom daily. An herb can help you sleep periodically while you are trying to find out what the real cause of the insomnia is.
